It looks like things are back on track with the new hospital in Corfu. I assume they are talking about the one that was started some time ago in Kontokali.
Positive developments in the efforts to integrate the new hospital is the award for machinery. The above announced to the media, Members N. Dendias added that signed the practical emergence of a medical company. What remains now is the final approval of the record by the Court.
"I hope that this is the end of a long road equipment for the new hospital. It is a modern equipment and the supply is another step to be able to finish the biggest project in Kerkyra reality in recent years. It is a project that went through many difficult stages and is a vital necessity for the local community. "
Good news for everyone living on Corfu, and for those of us who visit also.
I remember having to go to hospital in Corfu one evening. I had been out with some new found friends to a taverna in Benitses by the main drag. I was staying at this place called the Rovers Return. I got back in very very late or very early whichever. I opened up the shutters to look at the amazing stars and in flew a huge hornet. I tried to get it out of the room to no avail. I though he had gone. I laid down on the bed and it attacked me. I thought I had been shot or my thumb cut off. I yelled out and the owner came and went and got a taxi and put the hornet in a plastic bag. I sobered up. The cab driver although very experienced - got me to the hospital very quick and I watched my arm baloon up with poison. He rushed me into the hospital where they gave me a huge shot in the b*** and I watched my arm deflate. They kept in me overnight. Although the place was rather old and antiquated whatever they did they saved my life. Also, they kept me in overnight and the cabbie came back the next morning to see if I was ok and then took me back. I could not repay him enough but he would not take anything nor would the taverna owner. So all beware of flying hornets if you are allergice as people have died with such attacks.
good luck with the new hospital. I know it was old at the time but my life was saved regardless and they were very nice in there and they gave me some antibiotics to take. Also did not charge me anything at all.
You were very lucky for sure!! I have been stung but wasps whilst we have been in Corfu but never a hornet and by the sound of it I don't to be stung by one either
It was traumatic at the time. I thought that if I did not die from the sting I was surely going to die in that cab. He drove 100 miles an hour round all the bends from Benitses to the main part somewhere at breakneck speed and kept on looking down at my arm which was ballooning up with poison. It looked like a sausage. They save me though all of them. I owe my life to them. Any later the poison would have killed me so they said.
That was some close call Gillians. From you story above I do not know what was worse the sting or the taxi ride to the hospital. Seriously though on both accounts I am glad to hear it all came out well.
I know how you must react to the stings, I have a friend who suffers the same, and she goes berserk every time a wasp, bee or what ever comes with any distance of her. How she gets through a holiday I will never know.
Maria was stung while she was lying on a sunbed one day this year in Kassiopi. The locals said it was probably a hornet looking at the size of the lump.
Maria said she felt whatever it was that stung her when she knocked it off and it felt big and solid, she said it was like a needle being driven into her leg on her inside thigh..it must have been some size sting because there was blood running down the inside of her leg, she poured a bottle of water over the sting..but it was still stinging well into the evening.
She never went to the doctors as she never felt ill just the stinging..
Bruce PS..I did offer to suck the poison out
I can remember a few years ago now being on Jungle Warfare Training in Malaysia. During our training we were deep in the jungle, and came a cross a clearing where decided to camp down for the night. Not long after arriving one of the lads let out an almighty screech. "I have been bitten" he said, as we watched this long thin snake disappear into the under growth. "Where have you been bitten" we said. "On the a**e", he said. "Oh dear, you are going to die", we said.
No, seriously, we got the poison out quickly (please do not ask), and he was casevac off to hospital by helicopter. Apparently it was a Pit Viper snake or something like that. The lad did survive by the way.
The following news article is taken from the online Greek and English newspaper "The Corfu Today", dated the 12th March 2009. This refers to the new hospital that has been standing for many years as a concret shell in Kontokali, but in the past year or so has been nearing completion, with some small delay. Its was envisaged that it would be completed by the end of March, but now it looks like the end of June, but still using Corfu General as a back up.
Yeiamas, Chris
Emphasis on completing the projects for the New Hospital in Kontokali
Great progress in the building, recorded on the site of new hospital. This was found on a visit made there by the Secretary General Vosdou and the commander of GNK C. Mantzaropoulos. According to representatives of SMEs Mr Vosdou "work in building A (clinical patient rooms) have been almost completed, while the remaining connections are not yet for security reasons. Also work in surgical department of M.E.TH. where there should be new techniques and work in tune with the equipment provided by the relevant competition. "Since they have given full specifications of the machines have been any changes to be consistent and not have to move to new sites and decommissioning." As further emphasized the Region, ongoing assistance to the surrounding area, although the weather barriers, so easy to accelerate the work. Expected to become the connection of electricity and other agencies to provide networks.
Request for extension Mr. Vosdou noted that submitted by the contractor, request an extension of work by the end of June which will be examined by DEPANOM. In terms G.K.P.S. is an extension to the expenditure until the end of June. As is understood the project will not fully delivered until the end of March. However, the booths are almost ready. "Weather permitting we will be able to deliver the project before June apoperatomeno" noted Mr. Vosdou.
The commander of GNK “The work of the new hospital is developing at a good pace" of the governor took GNK C. Mantzaropoulos. "The state monitor closely. GNK The Administration is close to DEPANOM for any problem arising. " In a question to the staff of the hospital, said that recently passed by the House Law stipulates that the recruitment of 2,000 doctors nationwide. For the nursing staff to the recruitment of ASEP 5000, from where a large number will go to Corfu. The following news article is taken from the online Greek and English newspaper, "The Corfu Today", dated 18th March 2009. It is continual good news being received quite often on the how much the new hospital at Kontokali is progressing. This latest news is big step forward. Lets hope the continual progress keeps moving ahead, and the opening date of end of June still stands at present.
The first licenses for medical equipment for the new Hospital
The decision to start pre-construction radiographers in the new Hospital signed by the Prefect of Corfu Stefanos Poulimenos after application of radiation protection of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission. Licensing procedures and installation of new equipment for the new Hospital are progressing at a good pace and from the Public Health Department has given the prefecture, at the request of the Administration Hospital, permit the feasibility of placing Computerized Tomography scanner, mammography devices, and three radiological generators. Noted that the Department of the Prefecture and has filed a new request which relates to the specific X-ray machine installed in orthopedic surgery.
The following news article is taken from the online Greek & English newspaper, "The Corfu Today", dated Tuesday, 7th July 2009. It is slowly getting there. I suppose no one can grumble really as it stood as a skeleton for a number of years, before work recommence on it again. Over the past few months various dates have been given for completion including the start of the season, June, July, and now more than likely the Autumn. At least when it is finished, it should look alright rather than a concrete block with large holes in it.
With rapidly advancing work on the construction site of new hospital. According to the Minister of Justice and member of ND Law Mr. Dendias on Saturday, visited the site, to implement the 100 day schedule (starting from 1 June) for completion of work and delivery of the project. Mr. Dendias mentioned the issue of recruitment for the new hospital, noting that requires the adoption by parliament of legislation for local recruitment (Executive Law 101). "I must say that from this visit I am absolutely delighted. It appears the schedule will be met and therefore the outcome will have the opportunity to receive the New Hospital. Then there will be another time, including 100 days for the trial operation of the hospital, that would have received before, to test all machines, all parts and then put the issue of gradual or total relocation".
Staff
Referring to the issue of staff Mr Dendias stressed that the vote by the Greek Parliament for the regulation of the Executive Law 101, to recruit locals probably will mean further delay. He himself, assumes absolute responsibility for this delay. "For me the big stakes are in this work Corfiots Hospital, to serve Corfiots, people will come to stay and not to leave". In conclusion, the Ministry of Justice stated that in the meantime, if needed, will do whatever necessary to attempt Administration Hospital and the Minister of Health to fill the gaps with solutions, stage etc.
N. Dendias: A week earlier for the inauguration of the new hospital
The opening ceremony of the new hospital will be moved one week earlier than October 2 in order not to coincide with the dates of elections, said the Ministry of Justice Law Dendias. At a meeting Dendias indicated that previous matters and problems had been solved, allowing the hospital to be finished, and able to operate.
This story is from the "Corfu Today" dated 4th September. It will be great to see the hospital in full swing, rather than the open concrete mass that has been seen by many over recent years. Good luck to the new hospital and its staff.
The only doubts I have with the Corfu Hospital, modern as it is, is have they got the specialist medical staff to cope with the variety of problems they will encounter.
With the old one they used to send broken arms and legs to Athens for treatment as they didn't have the expertise on the Island.
According to friends of mine on Corfu, the new hospital at Kontokali is fitted, or will be fitted with entirely new equipment, and Staff have been and will be drafted in to work the same. It shall be worth seeing how it works out having seen it for many years as a concret block with square holes in it.
The new hospital has enough modern health machine for treatment. Hopefully this will inspire the staff to work for the benefit of the patients. If they are having problem with the nurses then I guess they should just hire foreigner nurses who are more dedicated in nursing patients. Indiana Open Heart Surgery

main problem is that nursing is not considered a profession by most Greeks and does not have 'status' it enjoys in UK, for example. Hence nurses are unwilling/unable to perform many functions and the patient is reliant on family support....the presence of their families in the building makes extra noise, and upsets other people who are trying to rest- it is a difficult situation to resolve!
