In Kavos for instance it was not unusual for stabbings to happen and on one occassion I well remember the streets being covered in Chip Wrappings and Puke. Not the ideal place for a couple in their 50's.
On our first visit tho' we did venture down there and as it was our friend Barbaras Birthday we were looking for an ideal romantic Taverna where Chris, her husband, could buy her lunch.
We pulled off the main road and turned right just past Messonghi or was it Benitses. Being our first visit we were somewhat suspicious of everything we saw and when we found ourselves driving thro' a canopy of Trees we felt like we were in Sherwood Forest. If a gang of Bandits had jumped out on us we wouldn't have been surprised.
Suddenly we came upon a clearing in which nestled a a Taverna on the right hand side of the road. Opposite this was a modern Villa where we later learned the owners lived. The setting was idyllic you couldn't have painted the scene from your mind no matter how hard you tried. This taverna was The Refuge. We parked the car and went in. Surprise, Surprise it was siesta time but of course we didn't understand the ways of the Greeks in those days.
We sat down and waited, and waited, and waited. Eventually a girl of about 15 or 16 came across the road and sat down with us. We explained what we had come for and she went back and roused her parents.
We had the best meal of that holiday at the Refuge and the Daughter asked if she could sit with us as she was trying to learn English. In the eaves of the Taverna a Swallow kept swooping in an out feeding her young. Around our feet Oranges rolled on the floor in the same way as we have windfall Apples.
We stayed there for about three hours and met an English guy who had come over a few years back and helped to build the Apartments in Kavos he just didn't bother to go home.
We've tried many times to find the Refuge since but without success. Can anybody help.
